MOTION TO SEAL/SHIELD

Keeping your record private.

If at any point someone has taken out a protective order, peace order, or civil protection order against a person in Maryland and DC, it is possible to keep that record private.

A Motion to Shield in Maryland and a Motion to Seal in DC petitions the court to keep the record of the protective or peace order closed from the public. To have this happen, the underlying order must have been dismissed by the petitioner or the court, or consented to by the respondent. There is no time requirement to file either motion if the underlying order was dismissed. However, if the underlying order was consented to, the respondent must wait until the order has expired before filing the Motion to Shield or Seal.
